San Antonio Do Seum Where Children DO!

Today was our second trip to the Do Seum. This children’s museum is pretty cool and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t usually enjoy museums. Everything is very “hands on” so it’s been perfect for Audrey. One thing I’ve noticed here that I haven’t seen at any other children’s museums would be the ‘baby rooms’. They have plenty of things for older (walking) children to entertain themselves with, but they also have areas specific for crawlers. Obviously that’s a wonderful idea for mothers with multiple children because you can find something for any age.

Audrey is a very independent child. When she’s playing she doesn’t want me anywhere near her. For the most part she likes for me to sit and watch while she goes off to explore. This usually means that I’m stuck standing by the stroller or sitting on the ground somewhere. At the Do Seum they did a good job of sneaking in seating areas for parents. In my opinion they still need more because I can see it being inconvenient on a busy day. The outdoor areas are very nice. Audrey was having so much fun playing in the water areas today while I sat in the shade. Unfortunately any bench by mulch was home to ant hills. I was bit several times before I moved to the covered concrete part. I do think they should have created a splash fountain for kids to run though. They are already getting soaked in the water attractions so why not go all out.

Audrey’s favorite area of course is Little Town. It’s a city for children under 5 and an employee guards the gate to make sure children are confined until their parents leave with them. This little town has a grocery store, veterinary clinic, food truck, post office, and even an airplane! We spend most of our time in that little room of chaos. I think my favorite part is that we can bring in food! I can’t stand the “no outside food or beverage” rule. The Do Seum has a little café that sells pizza, wraps, and other things for under $10. I haven’t eaten there yet but it smells yummy. I always prefer to pack our meals to save money. We bought the Do Seum membership so I think we’ll be spending a lot of time there this year. It’s always nice to have a place to take children when the weather outside isn’t nice.

Tom Ford Quads

Tom Ford WHY aren’t you more affordable?!

Today I have 5 Tom Ford Quads to show you. These sell at $80 a pop, which is INSANELY expensive in my opinion. If you have the money then I would say these are a nice splurge. HOWEVER if I was going to buy a TF item it would be a lipstick not an eye shadow quad. For the most part I felt like something was lacking with each quad. Meaning – I wouldn’t be able to go on a trip and take just one to fulfill both daytime and evening looks. If I’m going to spend $80 on an eye shadow palette I would like it to be a one stop shop kind of deal.

My top picks in order:

  1. Nude Dip
  2. Titanium Smoke
  3. Golden Mink
  4. Orchid Haze
  5. Silvered Topaz

Golden Mink – The top gold and copper colors are beautiful glitter shadows! This palette is really nice, but with 2 out of 4 being glitter shadows I can see how this could limit you a bit.

01 Golden Mink

Silvered Topaz – I was not impressed with this quad. The shadows were a nice texture but I felt like the color family was a bit boring.

05 Silvered Topaz Golden Mink & Silvered Topaz 2 Golden Mink & Silvered Topaz

Orchid Haze & Titanium Smoke

Orchid Haze & Titanium Smoke 2

Orchid Haze – a nice purple quad. I have no complaints other than the fact that I rarely reach for a purple shadow. I can’t say that this would be ‘worth’ the cost even though it is nice quality. There are several brands that have purple colors in their palettes for much less money.
Orchid Haze & Titanium Smoke

Titanium Smoke was my second favorite out of the 5. The top left color looks gold, but it actually transfers as a beautiful silver glitter. These shadows are lovely and this quad is great for night looks. I don’t think this palette would be suited for daytime looks.
Titanium Smoke

Nude Dip – This quad is by far my favorite out of the 5. I thought I was going to feel unfulfilled by not having a matte shadow but I wasn’t. I did a simple daytime smoky eye and I didn’t feel like the shimmer was too much. The colors all blend and work together well. The top left is a great highlight for the inner corners which is a huge bonus for me. I do think that I would add a darker shadow if I were going out in the evening.

It’s My Birthday!!!

Today I turned 27! Wow I still can’t believe it. I always felt like 27 was the line that once you passed you were considered “older”. That could just be my “twenty-something” year old brain still thinking dysfunctional about age. I only have one choice but to embrace it! Today was a lot less painful than I expected it to be though. It could be the ample amounts of distractions due to a fun filled camping trip to a Jelly stone Park. I didn’t plan to be camping on my birthday, it just happened this way because of Tom’s work schedule. It all worked out because we are having a nice time here. It’s amazing how different Texas camping is vs. well any place Tom and I have lived haha! This camp ground has a water park with a jumping pillow, lazer tag, arcade, and much more. I was so shocked to see that they have entertainment planned for kids with a new event starting almost every hour. It reminds me of an all inclusive resort in Mexico, except you camp! Audrey is being her social butterfly self, attempting to move into anyone’s camp that contains children. She’s been having a lot of fun and I’m happy we ended up coming. It will make this birthday even more memorable.

Tom was so good this year! I actually wrote in my journal that I thought Tom didn’t have anything planned because I told him I didn’t want anything (not true ever……). If I say I don’t really want anything it means that I don’t have a desire for any gifts, but would still appreciate some celebratory act on my birthday. Tom always surprises me because I can never tell if he will bomb or ace an occasion. This year he did wonderfully *Big Smile*. I thought he would never be able to plan something since I had been the one to plan the camping trip. I like to think I can read people so I usually know when Tom has planned something. In addition to that 80% of the time I can guess what he’s planned and what gift he bought. This time however was a complete surprise. I figured he would do the ‘guy thing’ and take my previous statement literal and do nothing.  Luckily he knows me pretty well. Today after lunch he and Audrey kicked me out of the camper to “prepare”. It was so cute that they were working together! Tom and Audrey came out with a plate of ice cream sandwiches – PERFECT because I don’t like cake. He even snuck away to the camp store and bought some cute yogi bear candles to light. After blowing out my candles I received cards from both him and Audrey. I adore that he got a card for Audrey to give me! I would have been thrilled if this were the end of it, but he pulled out a bag and told me to open it. He bought me a GoPro! What a wonderful hubby I have. All I really wanted was memorable special moments to remember my 27th birthday with, and he delivered that and more. I am blessed!

Toddler Goggles

Frogglez Swimming Goggles with Universal Strap for Kids

Aqua Sphere Seal Kid Swim Goggle

I bought these two goggles on Amazon to try for Audrey. She is almost 3 years old, but has gotten used to wearing goggles while swimming. Her swim school recommended I buy some for her and I purchased her first pair from them. In the beginning she hated wearing them. I didn’t push it and when she’d ask for them I would put them on and when she wanted them off I would take them off. I think as she grew older she started noticing that they helped her see better under the water. She started asking to wear her goggles at swimming pools and got really comfortable with them on. Eventually we lost the first pair from the swim school and since then I had purchased other “toddler”sized goggles, ALL of which leaked or wouldn’t seal. I finally decided to spend some coin and get good quality pairs.

The Frogglez seem like a great idea and we have tried them, but not successfully. They are too big for her still so they don’t seal. The head band part works great so far. I just wish there was a bit more stretch to so I wouldn’t have to pull so hard to get it over Audrey’s head. The Frogglez are for 3+ so I hope she grows into them well. They are more expensive being $19, but you can put most goggle frames on the head band. They connect with Velcro so it would be an easy switch if you wanted to change the goggle size.

The Aqua Sphere Seal goggles worked better than the Frogglez for Audrey. I really liked that they are a large framed goggle. This allowed me to place them on her easier because I didn’t have to worry about placing them perfectly over the eyes. They sealed better than the Frogglez since the band allows adjustments. I just tightened the band and pressed them to her face to get a good seal. These goggles were 3+ also, but the adjustable band makes them a better fit. These were a bit cheaper than the Frogglez being $17. They also came with a nice case to keep them in. I definitely like the Aqua Sphere goggles better right now since the Frogglez don’t even fit because the head band doesn’t adjust.

Our Weekend In Corpus Christi!

DSCN3020 IMG_4292

We went to Corpus Christi last weekend because Tom had a conference at the Omni. I didn’t think it was going to be as refreshing as it was because we weren’t leaving the state. I guess I didn’t consider it a ‘trip’. Other than the Omni being a less than average hotel, we had a great time. I still pinch myself that we live in a new state where we can drive to the beach instead of the mountains. It’s a nice change of pace and the people in Texas are just the friendliest around. We arrived Thursday afternoon and quickly discovered that the Omni wasn’t quite as nice as we were used to. Our room would have been wonderful if it had adult sized beds. The room had two DOUBLE beds which are 54×75 inches versus a queen which is 60×80. These are the beds that furniture stores sell for KIDS rooms so why is it in a hotel??? I was almost too long for this bed so I can’t imagine how a 6’ tall man would fare. Another HUGE con was the WIFI. Note only did you have to pay $11-$14 it didn’t work! I called the front desk and their response was “sometimes when the hotel is really full the WIFI doesn’t work well”. Correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t a hotel be prepared to accommodate a full house?! The room service meals were very good though. The pool was nice except it should have been twice as large because it was getting a little crowded. All in all we gave the Omni a 2.5-3 out of 5. I wish Corpus invested in tourism more. They need a nice strip of land by the ocean with nice hotels and restaurants on the water. The beach in Corpus is nice, I wouldn’t call it a destination mostly because the city really needs to construct a ‘destination area’. I would skip Corpus all together and go straight to Port Aransas if we were looking for beach time. On last night the conference had a reception that we attended. The food…..well let’s be honest it was pretty gross. Tom even got food poisoning from it! They had two protein dishes, chicken and Mahi Mahi. The chicken still had it’s skin but it was soggy instead of crispy. It tasted like they just boiled it and tossed in hot sauce. The fish was so dry that it became chalk in our mouths and that’s never a good sign. But they did have a live band and we spent most of the night dancing. It was fun dancing with Audrey. You can see some of her ‘dance moves’ in our vlog! It was great being able to dance as a family. The wall facing the ocean was mostly glass so it was lovely being able to look at the water as the sun went down – too bad the food wasn’t on par with the ambience. Over-all a nice low key weekend that I enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2015

This year we went to town on this sale. I have very few things that I actually splurge on in life……handbags and makeup. Other than that I run a tight budget. A lot of people see what I have and they assume that we are big spenders but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I save to buy and if I can’t save then I don’t buy. Last year I didn’t shop the Anniversary sale so I had money I saved up in addition to the money I saved for this sale. The older I get the more I believe that its better to spend money to buy quality items. I’d rather have a small closet with quality pieces than cheap clothes stuffed everywhere. Younger people tend to buy fashions that are “in” or “trendy” so their wardrobes rotate annually. I still buy fashionably in season items, but I look for comfort and quality a lot more than I used to. Part of growing up is discovering the things that YOU really like and I like to be comfortable. After you have children it also changed what you look for in your clothing. I never had anything against low rise jeans until now! I worked hard to have a flat stomach after carrying a baby, but I squirm at the idea of having to wear low cut pants. When I’m chasing around a toddler the last thing I want to worry about is pulling my pants up! Over-all it was a successful sale experience. I’m still giddy over the Louise et Cie boots I found!

Chest Freezer Love

IMG_4259 IMG_4260 IMG_4261

We recently purchased this 5.0 cu ft chest freezer since our rental home has a tiny side by side refrigerator. Before we moved to Texas we had invested in a large refrigerator with a drawer freezer that we had to leave behind when we sold our last home. I was spoiled with all the freezer space I used to have so when we moved into the rental I had a hard time. We originally thought we wanted to buy the 7.0 cu ft chest freezer they carry in Costco. I went to the store to buy one but it ended up being a lot larger than I expected. I went home and checked what Walmart had to offer online and I ordered the Haier. I was very happy with the price, but was unsure with the size. I wasn’t going to be able to see it before purchasing and that always gives me anxiety. Walmart offered free shipping and it arrived quickly. The negative reviews on this unit were usually surrounding damage and denting upon delivery, unfortunately I ended up experiencing this when it arrived. The chest had been dented in the back so the lid didn’t close correctly. It was packaged well so the denting must have happened before shipping to me. Luckily Walmart made life simple and we were able to load it in the car and go return it. The freezer was the perfect size so I decided to order another one in hopes that it would arrive in better shape. The second Haier I bought was a ‘local pick up’. The Walmart by me just happened to have ONE in the back (this wasn’t an option with freezer #1). Tom was out of town but I was able to bring it home and set it up on my own. Freezer #2 was in much better shape. There was some rippling on the top but no denting. We have been using it for about a month now and I LOVE IT. It’s been the perfect size for us. It’s large enough for me to freeze ready-made meals, but still small enough that I know what foods are hanging out in the bottom. If we end up needing more freezer space I would just buy a second one and keep it in the garage. Needless to say I am thrilled with this purchase. Everything worked out in the end and I’m so happy that I took a second chance after receiving a damaged unit.

Stay tuned for my top 10 meals I freeze for my family!
